About

Painting became the way I fashioned of expressing concepts that I wasn’t sure others would understand. The colors and fluid allow for movement; the act of taking a brush in my hand and mixing different colors to express what I’m feeling is important to me. Each color is an expression of how I am feeling in that moment. I enjoy working with acrylic because it allows me to add washes of color to my work that convey motion; I enjoy the weight and pull of the texture of paint as well as how quickly it dries. I paint to center myself and allow for a release of energy.

Why do I paint portraits and abstracts? A face, expressions, thoughts behind other’s eyes, wrinkles, certain upturns of lips intrigue me. It’s a challenge for me to paint that and try to get what’s behind another’s expression – what I think is behind that person’s expression and translate it on to a canvas. Most of my art is about my secrets as well as others. Even in an abstract piece, I want someone to look at my work and feel that there is something behind it worth learning more about. There are barriers to break down and mazes to navigate an exit to; I want viewers to see that in my work and take it into their lives. I want them to exercise connecting with others and not being comfortable with the walls we put up around us. I paint to for freedom and urge others to feel something in my art that inspires them to hopefully express their ideas of what freedom means to them.
